Autumn is a season of fruition and harvest, of celebration in abundance and the goodness of the earth. But it is, also, a season that starkly and realistically encourages us to see the limitations of our time. We kill the plants when we take their corn, potatoes and pumpkins. The deepening chill and first frosts tell us that life is not all summer and that winter will soon be on its way. Harvests are both beginning and endings.
