Skillful 20th-century watercolor copy of a colonial-era Mexican manuscript that integrates script with Indigenous pictorial representation, characteristic of central Mexican documentary traditions from the. Folio. Stitched gatherings of 19th-century laid paper ("Benedetto Picardo"). Leaves tanned and with burned edges (antiqued). 54 pages of watercolors. Skillful 20th-century watercolor copy of a colonial-era Mexican manuscript that integrates script with Indigenous pictorial representation, characteristic of central Mexican documentary traditions from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The leaves combine textual passages with painted images, suggesting their function as a hybrid record. The first image shows a page written in a handwriting that is difficult to decipher but it appears to be administrative or explanatory text accompanying the drawings. This was a common format in documents where colonial officials or scribes added alphabetic commentary to Indigenous pictorial accounts. Another image depicts two human figures: one holding a staff with an eagle and serpent (an image associated with the Mexica foundation myth of Tenochtitlan), the other holding a bow. Between them is a glyph-like emblem. Beneath is written Mexico, identifying the scene as a representation of the founding of Mexico-Tenochtitlan. Yet another image shows a stylized glyph: a stepped element with a circle and upright form. This is the conventional pictorial glyph for Mexico-Tenochtitlan, often painted in colonial codices to denote the city. One image appears to be a schematic map with a central body of water surrounded by plants, animals, and human figures. Such drawings represent the Basin of Mexico with its lakes and surrounding settlements. Iconography like temples, snakes, and birds indicates geographic or symbolic features of the valley. The work includes an image which shows rows of hill signs, each surmounted by vegetation. These are toponyms place glyphs used to represent communities, often drawn in series to indicate subject towns or territorial lists. One of the images presents a column of rectangular compartments with glyphs on the left and various images on the right, including a snake, bird, temple, and other plant or architectural forms. This functions as a toponymic register: a list of named places, each represented by its pictorial glyph, a common feature in tribute lists, land records, and historical narratives. Summary The manuscript is a late 20th-century copy (on 19th-century laid paper) concerning colonial New Spain that records aspects of the Mexica foundation narrative, maps the Basin of Mexico, and lists towns through glyphs. The early 19th-century laid paper seems to be repurposed from blank pages that originally formed part of an old legal document: each page is signed or intialed in the margin ("rubricada") to attest to the foliation or integrity of the text, yet the original manuscript page numbering is erratic and the gutter folds are non-existent, evidence that these pages were torn out and reassembled here to create the present modern facsimile "codex." A curious example of Mexican artisanal copy work.…
