Octavo, blue cloth (hardcover), v + 135 pp. Fine in a Very Good, mylar protected dust jacket with edgewear that includes chipping. From dust jacket: With progress in computer technology and applications moving ahead in leaps and bounds, there is an urgent need for people who have a broad, solid background in electronic data processing equipment and systems. The Second Revised edition of this fully illustrated three-volume work covers the state of the art today, providing a complete working framework from which to go on to further study of specific systems. Without confusing the reader with the specifics of any particular system, the book still remains totally relevant to all the various systems. An excellent introduction to the computer world, it requires no technical background of the reader and leads him gradually through a logical development of concepts. Unlike so many books on computers, it's material is not classified in rigid analytical categories but is rather covered in easy stages to insure rapid learning. Author John Murphydraws on his intimate knowledge of computer design to make this book both simple and profound. His belief is that an understanding of computers is not difficult to achieve when the concepts are stripped of highly technical jargon, reduced to fundamentals, and presented plainly. More than 300 all new illustrations, including many of systems illustrated here for the first time, help in further clarifying major points. Divided into three volumes, the book begins with a short history of the evolution of computers. From there, it goes on to explain computer language, the binary system, computer arithmetic, and computer memory. In volume two, circuits and functional units are taken up as well as the problems of storage and control. Volume three integrates the idea of a computer into the idea of a computer system. With this understanding of computer systems, the reader can go on to develop an understanding of computer organizations and hardware and software control.
