Item description from seller

[BEADS] [TRADE] [TRADE BEADS] [ECONOMY] Peter Francis, Jr. Beads and the Discovery of the New World, Occasional Paper No. 3 of the Center for Bead Research (Lake Placid. NY: Lapis Route Books for The Center for Bead Research, 1986). Turquoise-colored paper wraps with a blue cloth tape spine binding; [2], [ii], 65, [1] pp; illustrations & maps; table of contents; index; extensive reference bibliography. Measures 8.5 x 11 inches. Some toning to covers; several pages with a creased corner; overall, in VG condition. [16-670] In his Notes to the Reader, Francis writes, “The primary sources of information for this work have been the reports, journals, letters, and descriptions of explorations in the New World written by the explorers themselves or by contemporary editors. By relying on historical sources both advantages and disadvantages are encountered. The chief drawback is that such sources are often scanty, since the explorers of the New World were especially interested in our topic except under certain circumstances. For example, there is a great deal of literature on gold and pearls but very little on plant materials used as beads; there is a wealth of data on wampum, but the ubiquitous other sorts of shell beads are hardly every mentioned. On the other hand, these sources do afford us a glimpse into the past and into the minds of the people who actually lived the events surrounding the discovery and exploration of America. Such insights are valuable, and it is with an appreciation of both the limitations and rewards of this study that it is being offered.” Francis’ study covers three major topics: Beads of the Native Americans, Beads Brought to America, and Case Histories in the Bead Trade. Those topics are broken down into several sections, including the mechanics of the bead trade, the use of wampum, American and European perceptions and attitudes toward beads, and, of course, a discussion of the “purchase” of Manhattan Island for beads. The study is a very interesting and informative read.
