For close to a decade, The Daly News was the main communications tool at the Center for the Advancement of the Steady State Economy, and one of the most-read blogs going on limits to growth and ecological economics. It was named for Herman Daly, the champion of steady-state economics. Best of The Daly News, edited by Brian Czech, is a collection of the best essays from that time. Organized around its six core writers, Herman Daly anchors it with essays on net welfare, the population problem, war and peace, the World Bank, and Pope Francis's Laudato si'. Brian Czech targets economic myths and the gaps in environmental journalism. Brent Blackwelder makes the case for electing more women as a prerequisite for sustainability. Rob Dietz pulls back the curtain on growth's "magic act." James Magnus-Johnston defends arts and culture from a steady-state angle, and Eric Zencey looks at everything from China's growth haze to urban decay. The pieces move from philosophy, theology, ecology, economics, history, politics, sociology, and psychology. Accessible and often funny, grounded in sound science and common sense, Best of The Daly News offers an entry point to a more sustainable economic vision.
