For a century and a half, "Town & Country" has celebrated in print the lives of America's elite, and this is one of two books ("High Society" is the other) published to commemorate the magazine's 150th anniversary in 1996. It provides an abundance of detail about the nation's most notable families, arranged alphabetically - from Acheson to Zimbalist - and chosen from more than 5000 issues of the magazine. There are entries for nearly 2200 individuals, and 23 longer biographies of dynasties such as the Adamses, the Astors, the du Ponts, the Mellons, the Pulitzers, the Rockefellers and the Roosevelts. They are presented both in their public personae (as industrialists and philanthropists), and in their private pursuits (as parents and grandparents, sailors and polo players, animal lovers, and demons and the bridge table).
