Synopsis :

Artificial intelligence (AI) may be the most beneficial technological development of the twenty-first century. Media hype and raised expectations for results, however, have clouded understanding of the true nature of AI--including its limitations and potential. AI at War provides a balanced and practical understanding of applying AI to national security and warfighting professionals as well as a wide array of other readers. Although the themes and findings of the chapters are relevant across the U.S. Department of Defense, to include all Services, the Joint Staff and defense agencies as well as allied and partner ministries of defense, this book is a case study of warfighting functions in the Naval Services--the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps. Sam J. Tangredi and George Galdorisi bring together over thirty experts, ranging from former DOD officials and retired flag officers to scientists and active duty junior officers. These contributors present views on a vast spectrum of subjects pertaining to the implementation of AI in modern warfare, including strategy, policy, doctrine, weapons, and ethical concerns.

À propos des auteurs: Sam J. Tangredi, USN (Ret.), is the Leidos Chair of Future Warfare Studies and professor of National, Naval, and Maritime Strategy at the U.S. Naval War College. A surface warfare officer and warship captain deployed world-wide, Dr. Tangredi also served multiple tours of duty in the Pentagon as a leader of strategic planning teams. He has published seven books and more than two hundred journal articles. A graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy class of 1978, he earned an MA from the Naval Postgraduate School and a PhD from the University of Southern California. He splits his time between Newport, RI, and Coronado, CA.

Captain George Galdorisi, U.S. Navy (Ret.), is Director of Strategic Assessments and Technical Futures for the Naval Information Warfare Center Pacific. Prior to joining NIWC Pacific, he completed a thirty-year career as a naval aviator, culminating in fourteen years of consecutive service as executive officer, commanding officer, commodore, and chief of staff. He is the author of seventeen books, including four consecutive New York Times bestsellers. He especially enjoys writing speculative fiction about the future of warfare. His most recent novel, Fire and Ice, was widely recognized as being prescient regarding Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
