Item description from seller

xviii, 194 p.; 22 cm. Carries Nihil obstat and Imprimatur. Dedicated to Francis Aidan, Cardinal Gasquet. `William Barlow, through his consecration of Archbishop Parker, is the only link that binds the present Anglican succession of bishops to their Catholic predecessors. Yet the gravest doubt rests upon his own consecration. It that fails, the whole Anglican succession fails with it' ([ix]) -- `Of the Diocesan Records for the years 1533-1555, all are perfect except Barlow's three dioceses, which are all missing. Of the other Ecclesiastical Records which bear on the case all are missing or mutilated where Barlow is concerned, yet they are in many different places and custodies' (xvi) -- `We cannot throw the blame on Barlow's successor, or on Queen Mary, as Archbishop Wake tried to do. Mary had no interest in Barlow. It must have been done between 1559 and, say, 1620. The period of the Bonner trial seems the most likely for the collection of these damaging documents. But the mutilation of the Roll seems to have been later, probably 1613.' (xvii) `It is worth noticing, too, how all the chief Anglican writers in Elizabethan times were careful to leave a loophole in all that they wrote on episcopal succession to cover the case of an actual breat, It certainly suggests that they at least knew how the case stood about Barlow, and realised that although it was necessary for them to defend Episcopacy against the Puritans, it would not do to close the door too rigidly against those who had not been validly and episcopally ordained.' (159) Good ex-lib. edge-spotted orig. green cloth. Little marg. penc.
