A propos de cet article

Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine, Vols. 9-10 (April - December 1821). Edinburgh: William Blackwood; London: T. Cadell and W. Davies. Two bound volumes, together comprising the year 1821. With the magazine's notorious review of Shelley's Adonais, Coleridge's literary correspondence, the conclusion of Galt's The Steam-Boat, and a contemporary British review of the 1814 campaign against Washington. Blackwood's Magazine was a British magazine and miscellany printed between 1817 and 1980. It was founded by publisher William Blackwood and originally called the Edinburgh Monthly Magazine, but quickly relaunched as Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine. It was affiliated with Tory politics and a controversial tone described by scholars as "brilliant, troubling, acerbic"; "bold and forceful"; "riotous . blackguardly"; and full of "puffery, and scurrilous critique". Having published a host of significant authors, literature scholar William B. Cairns judged it the best British literary journal between 1815 and 1833. These two volumes cover 1821, the year the magazine brought its volumes into line with the calendar year. Vol. 9 runs from April to August, and Vol. 10 runs from August to December, including two supplementary numbers ("August, Part II" and "December, Part II"). Vol. 10 contains the magazine's mocking December 1821 review of Shelley's Adonais, his elegy for Keats, complete with a parody, "Elegy on my Tom Cat." This was the same magazine whose attack on Endymion Shelley blamed for hastening Keats's death. Vol. 10 also prints "Selections from Mr. Coleridge's Literary Correspondence," genuine Coleridge contributions including a letter to William Blackwood and his essay on the words "Object and Subject." Contents of note, Vol. 9 (April-August 1821): A review of the anonymous Narrative of the Campaigns of the British Army at Washington, written by George Robert Gleig, a young British officer who took part in the burning of Washington in 1814. A letter on Washington Irving's "Rip Van Winkle." Accounts of Havana, Rio de Janeiro, and a voyage aboard a Florida pirate vessel. Verses and remarks on the death of Napoleon (May 1821), and a piece on the late Henri Christophe, King of Haiti, with a letter from him to a British senator. A review of Byron's Marino Faliero, published the month the play appeared. "Vanderdecken's Message Home," an early literary treatment of the Flying Dutchman legend. A review of Robert Owen's Report to the County of Lanark, a founding text of Owenite socialism, and of Captain Parry's North-West Passage journal. Contents of note, Vol. 10 (August Part II - December Part II, 1821): Besides the Adonais review and the Coleridge correspondence: reviews of Byron's Don Juan Cantos III-V and Scott's The Pirate; a notoriously harsh review of James Hogg's autobiographical Memoir; "Stanzas Dedicatory" to Francis Jeffrey and a mock history of the "Decline and Fall" of the rival Edinburgh Review; a review of Howison's Sketches of Upper Canada and "The Emigrants' Voyage to Canada"; notices of the death of Mungo Park and of Timbuctoo; and accounts of George IV's coronation, his visit to Ireland, and the funeral of Queen Caroline. John Galt: Vol. 9 reviews Annals of the Parish, Galt's best-known novel, on its first publication, and Vol. 10 prints a letter to its author. Galt's The Steam-Boat runs through both volumes and concludes in Vol. 10 (December 1821), before its publication in book form in 1822. Its installments include Thomas Duffle's account of George IV's coronation. Vol. 10 also contains "The Buried Alive," a premature-burial tale generally attributed to Galt and often cited as a forerunner of Poe. The Steam-Boat begins in Vol. 8 of this run. Vols. 7-8, offered separately in the same binding, also contain the complete serialization of Galt's first novel, The Ayrshire Legatees. Together, Vols. 7-10 hold both serials complete, and a combined price is available for all four volumes. Monthly contents leaves: The monthly contents.…
