Pair of Victorian Brass-Mounted Church of England Prayer Books (1864 & 1877) - Family Presentation to Alice Mabel Brown A handsome pair of Victorian brass-bound Church of England Books of Common Prayer, published in 1864 and 1877, retaining their original black leather bindings with decorative brass furniture, protective brass edge guards, working brass clasps, bright gilt page edges and original Victorian presentation inscriptions to Alice Mabel Brown. These finely bound presentation volumes are excellent examples of Victorian craftsmanship. The brass mounts, edge guards and clasps were designed to enhance both appearance and durability, helping preserve the bindings remarkably well for approximately 150 years. The two books have remained together since the Victorian period and both bear contemporary presentation inscriptions to Alice Mabel Brown, one presented by her grandmother in 1865, the other by her father in 1877, creating an attractive documented family association. Although not originally issued as an identical set, they form an excellent complementary pair united by their shared ownership history. Dated: 24th January, 1877. An additional contemporary handwritten set of initials ("H.M.B.") appears on a preliminary page, also dated 24th January 1877. Features: Original black leather binding Gothic-style pierced brass corner mounts Brass edge guards Decorative brass spine guards Two original brass clasps Original fabric page marker Bright gilt page edges Light foxing confined mainly to opening leaves Original presentation inscription Printed by George E. Eyre & William Spottiswoode, Printers to the Queen's Most Excellent Majesty, London, Edinburgh & New York. Condition: Both volumes remain in very good antique condition. Leather bindings are sound with only light age-related wear. All brass furniture, including corner mounts, edge guards, spine guards and clasps, is complete and retains an attractive original patina. Gilt page edges remain bright. Internally clean, with only light foxing to the opening leaves of the larger volume. Bindings are firm and all clasps close securely. Historical Interest: Presentation prayer books of this quality were often given to commemorate important Victorian family occasions. These two volumes have remained together for over 150 years, preserving their original inscriptions, family provenance and complete brass-mounted bindings. Examples retaining their original brass furniture and working clasps are becoming increasingly difficult to find.
