1842. Twentieth edition. 462pp. and many illustrations within the text. No Author Stated. This is a fascinating book for the Victorian youth and is packed full of information and details of the pastimes of the period. The book is divided into eight sections: Minor Sports - marbles, tops, balls, etc.; Athletic Sports - archery, cricket, gymnastics, fencing; Aquatic Recreations - angling and swimming; The Fancier - birds, silkworms, rabits, guinea pigs, pigeons, etc.; Scientific Recreations - arithemtic, magnetism, optics, aerostatics, and chemistry; Games of Skill - draughts and chess; The Conjuror - legerdemain, tricks with cards, fireworks; Miscellaneous Recreations - deaf and dumb alphabet, puzzles, riddles, etc. The book has been rebacked and recased in later (probably late 20th or early 21st century) brown cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine. The case of the book is in excellent condition. The contents are tight with new white endpapers. The pages are clean with some expected small stains and marks from finger smudges, etc. There is also some scattered but mostly light foxing and a tear on the top corner of page 439. The title-page and last page are soiled but there is no inscription.…
