Item description from seller

The Papakura and District Historical Society can be justly proud of this excellent -- in content, illustration and poduction standards -- history of their area which certainly has a story well-worth telling. This was accomplished with the skilled and objective account prepared by Elsdon Craig, an established historian and writer. Before the arrival of European settlers the Papakura area was well populated by Maori and regarded as a food basket, gaining produce from land and water. As Auckland became established as a dominant urban area Papakura, immediatly to its south, became frontier territory, with the newcomers keen to secure its fertile land and the native tribes equally determined to retain them. Arrivals from various parts of Great Britain took-up land in the district in 1847 and as the number of immigrants increased, so did the demand for land. However, the district was also strategically important, covering the coastal area where the Waikato River, important as a transport link' joined the Tasman Sea, and including much of the Manakau Harbour. As tensions grew the Government began construction of the Great South Road, using military men fror the work The almost inevitable conflict resulted, the demands for land for settlers being the decisive factor. While the book covers historic aspects of the original Maori occupation of the disterict and comprehensively examines the result of the spread south from Auckland of new settlers and of subsequent development up to contemporary times, this work is most notable for is study of the long pre-European era of Maoridom, plus its rational account to the bleak period of the Land was of the Waikato in the1860s.These are followed by the growth and progress of the district leading up to Papakura's elevation to city status in 1975 -- but still confronted by the spread of urban development from Metropilitan Auckland which threatened is rural and agricultural traditions. As a template for a district history "Breakwater Against the Tide" represents a perfect formula. First edition of 1982, 198 pages including six appendices and index. Two appendices lists passengers of the Viola and Resolute, which arrived in Auckland.the mid-1860s with many immigrants who settled in the Papakura area. Illustrations include colour toned decorated map end-papers, b/w photos throughout, some art, drawings, maps and plans. Blue hard covers with gilt spine titles are VG+ as is the text block, no inscriptions. Colour art DJ showing early waterside flour mill is VG with tiny section missing at front top corner, light, unobtrusive fade band to spine area.
