A propos de cet article

A Brief Historical & Descriptive Account of Sefton Church, in the County of Lancaster, Thomas Ashcroft â" First Edition Publication: Liverpool, T. B. Johnson, 1819 Formatting: 8vo, pp. 55. Condition Report: Near Fine. This volume has been wonderfully preserved and sits tight within an exceptionally handsome, modern quarter-calf binding over vividly marbled boards. The binding exhibits no discernible shelf-wear; the leather remains pristine and supple, whilst the gilt lettering upon the front morocco label is notably bright and entirely unoxidised. Internally, the text block is remarkably fresh for its age. The pages display only mild, customary age-toning with a few isolated instances of light spotting, yet they remain wonderfully crisp, clean, and entirely free from any tears, creases, or obtrusive historical ownership markings. An exemplary, tightly bound, and aesthetically striking copy of a remarkably scarce text. Catalogue Note:ÂFirst edition. This vanishingly rare provincial imprint provides a vital, early nineteenth-century record of St Helen's Church in Sefton, Lancashire. The scarcity of Ashcroftâs work on the open market is underscored by the fact that only a single institutional copy is currently recorded at the British Library. The volume is beautifully presented in a bespoke, high-quality modern quarter-leather binding that sympathetically respects the book's period origins, complete with a cleanly tooled leather title label to the upper board. As is customary for this publication, it was issued without illustrations, relying instead on Ashcroft's vivid and meticulous descriptive prose to document the architectural and historical nuances of the parish. Affectionately known as the "Cathedral of the Fields", St Helen's Church in Sefton boasts an extraordinary history and some of the finest Tudor carved woodwork in the North West of England. In this exceptionally rare 1819 account, local antiquarian Thomas Ashcroft of Lydiate provides a meticulous, first-hand exploration of the churchâs architecture, monuments, and enduring legacy. Ashcroft's study remains a crucial primary resource for understanding the historical fabric of the parish long before later Victorian restorations took hold, offering modern readers and local historians alike an evocative window into the ecclesiastical heritage of early nineteenth-century Lancashire.…
