James Morehead has answered those questions, and more, since he was a child, enduring bullying and ridicule because of his appearance. This book, a rare find about the subject, creatively and poetically explains the definition of albinism to children and people of all ages; what it was like growing up as an albino; and how he overcame being ostracized. He credits his personal faith in God, and his family and friends who loved and cheered for him in spite of his outer shell with helping him to achieve his dreams and advocate for others with albinism.
With the assistance of his seven-time Emmy-award winning television journalist and daughter Andrea Morehead Allen, they cleverly share how he was able to build confidence, self-esteem, and self-love by recognizing that God made everyone in his image for a specific purpose. This inspiring book highlights the important lessons of celebrating our differences, and how being inclusive of others is part of God's master plan to foster appreciation and acceptance of others.
If you're looking for a book that helps children understand and build the character traits of compassion, empathy, and kindness, "The Brightest Star" is a must read.
The Foreword is written by Marvin Jones III, one of the most recognized actors who has albinism. He's known for his amazing portrayal of the character Tobias Whale in The CW superhero series "Black Lightning," and as the voice of Tombstone in the superhero film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
Award-winning ABC News Weekend Anchor Linsey Davis and author of three best-selling children's books including "The World is Awake," "One Big Heart," and "Stay This Way Forever," endorses "The Brightest Star" and provides the Afterword. Davis writes: "Part imagination with a dash of spirituality and a healthy serving of acceptance sprinkled with hope throughout. The Brightest Star has all the ideals of humanity baked right in. It is the recipe any parent would hope their child would follow as they learn about and embrace people who may not look like them. It is not only a reminder of God's grace and presence in our lives, but a testament to His ability to dream bigger dreams for us than we have for ourselves. It is a much-needed light to illuminate not just what it's like to grow up as an albino, but it is a love letter to us all about our value and beauty as God's magnificently made creations."
The illustrator is Stephanie Hider from Oklahoma. She magnificently captures the heart, heartache, and story of personal achievement against all odds in this inaugural autobiography illustration project.
