Item description from seller

This is the 1939 facsimile of the atlas Britannia, this produced by Alexander Duckham from his personal copy of the original Ogilby’s Britannia of 1675. Duckham was a well-known British lubricants and motor-oil firm closely associated with early motoring. The facsimile appears to have been issued partly as a commemorative or prestige publication connected with the company’s 40th anniversary and there is an introductory note by A. Duckham, publisher, fixed to front pastedown. This is a good, clean, bright facsimile copy of John Ogilby's innovative road atlas Britannia of England and Wales, complete with reproductions of all 100 strip road maps. Originally issued in 1675, Britannia was the first road atlas of England and Wales to be based on surveys and measurements and drawn to scale as strip maps, an innovation at the time. Ogilby prefaced his atlas with a dedication to “His most Serene and Sacred Majesty. The High and Mighty Prince, Charles II of England, Scotland, France and Ireland, King, Defender of the Faith &c.” (and it goes on). As well as the 100 strip maps, this facsimile faithfully reproduces all other introductory pages, notes for the map's use and about the towns shown, it also includes the map of England and Wales showing all the roads described in the body of the work. There are some smudges to the cream cloth boards and minor bumping to the extremities, but internally it is very sound and generally bright and clean. I would describe it as a very good copy. 100 plates of road maps, each containing six strips per double page, prefaced by 8 introductory pages. 10 x 12.5 inches. Please note that this item is located in Australia and additional postage (to that calculated by Abe Books) may be required if it is being posted internationally. Please contact beforehand if you need to know the exact cost.

Description de la boutique

Morgan the Maps is the online business of a retired, now-elderly bibliophile gradually dispersing all of the various books and maps that have built up over a lifetime of different interests. Not a collection as such, more an accumulation of items, most of which I am recently rediscovering in a garage full of boxes of books. Interests over the years have been in the development of road, canal and rail transport in the UK over the last 300 years, and the industrial revolution. These topics as they have affected South Wales has been a particular focus. My relocation to the Adelaide Hills in South Australia for the last 50 years did not diminish those early interests. All items are located in the Adelaide Hills.
