Item description from seller

Original broadside printed in blue and red and measuring 8 1/2 x 15 1/2 inches. In remarkably good condition. Bright and clean and with no ears.Los Angeles was extremely fortunate in having Charles Lummis as its chief booster. After walking 3,00 miles alone across the country he arrived in Los Angeles and Harrison Otis Gray immediately appointed him editor of the Times. In Lummis we leave behind the Brook and Willard-type boosters who mainly yelled at Easterners--Sun, Health, Beach, Land and Freedom! When Lummis took the reigns of promoting Los Angeles as a destination for Easterners he instead focused on the art, architecture and the literature of the LA region. He toned it up, not down. He was a very charismatic, erudite and eloquent man who did more than anyone else as the turn of the century to change the image of Los Angeles. He soon became put out a new magazine that would discuss these ideas in detail, illustrated by local artists and photographers. Poetry, religion, philosphy, and of course local sites of interest were all dealt with in a very professional manner."At the end of 1894 Charles Fletcher Lummis was publicly named editor of The Land of Sunshine, and the first issue produced under his control was January 1895. Lummis promised that the magazine's coverage of Southern California would be "concise, interesting, expert, accurate" to the extent that it would be trusted by Eastern readers. He also placed an increased emphasis on the cultural and intellectual content of the magazine. According to the Los Angeles Times, he transformed the magazine from a "Chamber of Commerce promotional sheet" into a "sterling literary magazine" in which he voiced his own opinions about everything from art and philosophy to politics and current events. Perhaps his favorite subjects, however, were championing Native American rights and criticizing the Federal Indian Policy. [We can see this in the image of this broadside]. Lummis was regarded as an "impulsive firebrand" as a thinker and a writer, and his ideas, both in The Land of Sunshine and other works, often had a polarizing effect on other writers and academics. In June 1895, the magazine was reduced to dimensions of 6 by 9 inches (15 cm 23 cm), although its total number of pages grew." In 1902 Lummis decided that the entire arid West should be covered and he changed the name of the magazine from "Land of Sunshine" to "Out West." Lummis edited the magazine by himself until the February 1903 issue, when he was joined by Charles Amadon Moody: together, they would edit the magazine until Lummis departed in November 1909.Without Lummis it lost influence. With Lummis at the helm it was said the "The Land of Sunshine" was the only magazine Teddy Roosevelt ever took the time to read. In May 1923, it was consolidated with Overland Monthly to form Overland Monthly and Out West Magazine, which remained in publication until July 1935. Broadside such as this are rarely found.
