Het is een 'zedenschildering' met bijbehorende zedenles. Consciences oordeel over de benepen provinciestad Darlingen is echter niet zo vleiend. (.) Kortrijk heeft in het leven van Hendrik Conscience een grote rol gespeeld. Hij verbleef er van 16 januari 1857 tot 11 september 1868 als arrondissementscommissaris."
