Larsen is a leading expert on Middle East butterflies and a well known author to Butterflies of Lebanon (1974), Butterflies of Oman (1980) and Butterflies of Saudi Arabia and its Neighbours (1984). Further he has contributed to the series Fauna of Saudi Arabia, and he has published numerous papers in various scientific journals.
