Five works in one volume, 8vo, pp. x, 3-23, [1], 1-180, [1]; 55, [1]; [3]-49; [viii], 128; 13, [3], 1-109, [3] advertisements; contemporary calf, rather worn, joints cracked, but preserving original morocco label. A fine collection of tracts in one volume. This is the third edition of Thomas Edwards's Canons of Criticism, which attacks Warburton's edition of Shakespeare: it first appeared (under the title A Supplement) in 1748, and this is the first time it was printed with this title, which Edwards borrowed ironically from Warburton himself. With this are bound two other pamphlets concerning literary matters, one dramatic (by John Hippisley, son of the actor, but himself better known as a writer on Africa), and one poetic, by Richard Meadowcourt, who was a canon of Worcester Cathedral. The final item is a work on the (relatively) newly-discovered remains of Herculaneum: it was first published in Venice, but is here reprinted by William Meyer, a London bookseller specialising in Italian books a three-page advertisement for his stock is printed at the end of the work. Meyer also had a circulating library, but oddly in this book he gives no address, either on the title page or in the advertisements.
