A propos de cet article

Description :

New York 1856, Harper. Original stiff wrappers,an article in Harper's Magazine, pp.733-756, covers dusty, worn but solid, complete issue of pp.721-860, 18 Japan drawings, 16.5 x 26 cm. * * FIRST & ONLY RARE EDITON * * . *** **** *** . . . COMMODORE PERRY'S EXPEDITION TO JAPAN, SECOND VISIT . . . * This is the historic first publication of Perry's second visit to Japan in 1856. The magazine title reads: COMMODORE PERRY'S EXPEDITION TO JAPAN, SECOND VISIT. . * This work is the first published account of Perry's second visit to Japan to negotiate a trade treaty. This work is the one and only record of the second visit to be published commercially prior to the complete expedition published later that same year. . Although inside of the front cover, there is a "contents" page, which lists the titles of the articles, but sadly it lacks the credits to the author of the text, the photographer and the artist who drew the illustrations. . * The illustrations provide Americans and most of the world with their earliest images of Japan: . The 16 illustrations have the following captions: 1. View of Edo bay 2. View of Yokuhama [sic for "Yokohama"] 3. Commissioners barge 4. Japanese nobles. [Prince of Mimi-saki & Hayashi dai gaku . no Kami or Prince Counselor . 5. Wrestlers [from an original Japanese picture]. 6. Japanese ladies of distinction 7. Village of Yokuhama [sic for Yokohama] 8. Household utensils 9. Boiling the pot 10. Shrines and candlesticks 11. Buddhist temple and burial place 12. Musical instruments of worship 13. View of Hakodadi 14. Fishing at Hakodadi 15. Weaving 16. Blacksmith's bellows 17. Praying machine 18. American burial place . *** The agreement between the Shogun and the Americans achieved the preliminary terms of the new treaty. Among the main points the Japanese outlined the limitations and the confinement of Americans to visiting Hakodadi and Shimoda. On June 28, 1856, Commodore Perry left Japan, for the United States. The treaty was partially agreed to, but more work was clearly needed to accomplish the historic 'Opening of Japan." . *** CONDITION: The work is bound in the original wrappers, which were on thin paper. There is the usual scuffing, closed tears, and a few mended tears, stains and dustiness, dog ears, and the like. The text is very clean with no issues. The illustrations are clean, and clear. The work is intact with all of the spine lettering. . This work should be rebound in a solid binding to preserve it for posterity. . *. N° de réf. du vendeur 35033701
