Small folio. 9.75 x 12 inches. 512 pp. Bound in original full calf with gilt tool decorated and blind-stamped borders to boards; rebacked using original spine, which is in compartments with raised bands, decorated gilt. Marbled edges and endpapers. Boards marked and scratched in places and extremities worn. Some foxing of plates, small damp stain affecting inner edge of first twenty pages and one marginal tear, not affecting text. Early ink inscription on second free endpaper. Generally a clean interior and the whole presents a handsome appearance. Illustrated with 13 engraved plates, including one serving as frontispiece. Richard Lawrence, a Birmingham veterinary surgeon is known to have been active between c.1790 and c.1820. His first work on the horse had been published in Birmingham in 1801. COPAC records copies with a January 1 date to the dedication while this copy is May 1 and thus appears to be a later reprint. While the 1816 text and title page are the same, a few of the plates are dated 1817. A revised edition appeared in the early 1830s after the passing of the Game Act of 1831. The main part of the book is concerned with the horse, its breeds, veterinary treatment, horsemanship, notable achievements, etc. The last section covers the dog, including shooting and the game laws.
