Utamaro Kitagata, (1750 -1806), a Japanese Woodblock reprint, hand woodblock printed in full color, a stunning copy of the original. . *** SUBJECT: This print depicts a prostitute. She holds a small towel over her right shoulder, preparing to take a bath. She wears two long wooden combs in her with a long hair pin. . Her Kimono is open revealing her left breast, while she looks to her left. . *** CONDITION: Superb copy, flawless, with the rare and stunning ground mica fleck background. . *** WHO WAS KITAGAWA UTAMARO: [c.?1753-31 October 1806]: He was a Japanese artist. He is one of the most highly regarded practitioners of the Ukiyo-e genre of woodblock prints, especially for his portraits of beautiful women, or Bijin-ga. He also produced nature studies, particularly illustrated books of insects. . Utamaro's work reached Europe in the mid-nineteenth century, where it was very popular, enjoying particular acclaim in France. He influenced the European Impressionists, particularly with his use of partial views and his emphasis on light and shade, which they imitated.
