Calumet K is a novel written by Henry Kitchell Webster. The story takes place in the early 1900s in the city of Chicago, where the protagonist, Peter McCord, is a successful businessman who is determined to make a name for himself in the world of finance. He is a self-made man who has worked his way up from poverty, and he is now the owner of a large stock brokerage firm. However, his success comes at a cost. He has become so consumed with his work that he has neglected his family, including his wife and two children. When his son is kidnapped, Peter realizes that he has made a grave mistake and that his priorities need to shift. As he searches for his son, he comes to realize that his business partner, Calumet K, is behind the kidnapping. Calumet K is a mysterious figure who seems to have a hold over Peter, and he is determined to bring him down. The novel explores themes of ambition, greed, and the importance of family. It is a gripping tale that keeps the reader on the edge of their seat until the very end. Webster's writing is engaging and vivid, and he creates a world that is both familiar and unfamiliar at the same time. Overall, Calumet K is a must-read for anyone who enjoys a good thriller with a touch of family drama. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Présentation de l'éditeur
The contract for the two million bushel grain elevator, Calumet K, had been let to MacBride & Company, of Minneapolis, in January, but the superstructure was not begun until late in May, and at the end of October it was still far from completion. Ill luck had attended Peterson, the constructor, especially since August. MacBride, the head of the firm, disliked unlucky men, and at the end of three months his patience gave out, and he telegraphed Charlie Bannon to leave the job he was completing at Duluth and report at once at the home office. Rumors of the way things were going at Calumet under the hands of his younger co-laborer had reached Bannon, and he was not greatly surprised when MacBride told him to go to Chicago Sunday night and supersede Peterson.
