A propos de cet article

Burns & Oates, Tunbridge Wells, 1992. XV,254p. Original hard bound with pictorial dust wrappers. ?The book clearly illustrates how ?ambivalence? correctly describes Christianity?s attitudes toward women, for although women could be seen as countercultural agents in such areas as martyrdom and asceticism, they received a firmly subordinate placement within Christian society itself. ?Carnal Knowing? spins a woeful tale of how the naked female body became lost as a bearer of female subjectivity, too deeply associated with sex, sin, and death by male authors and painters. (?) ?Carnal Knowing? surveys a wide sweep of Western religious cultural history. Miles wisely attends to religious practices, to the realia, before addressing the representation of the female body. Baptism, martyrdom, and asceticism were all areas in which the naked body was manifest in early Christianity - but unproblematically only for men, whose subjectivity could be readily displayed in the ?interdependence of body and consciousness? The myth of Adam and Eve (?) forged the association for the Christian West of female nakedness with sin, sex, and danger (?). Miles gloomily concedes ? there is no iconographical tradition in the Christian West that identifies spiritual struggle or the cultivation of a centred religious self with the female body? (p.144). Yet she holds out the hope that women artists whose work is both public and collective may create an adequate artistic practice for the representation of female subjectivity. Miles (?) adopts a modified Foucauldian approach, claiming that the ?productive? (not just ?reflective?) nature of such representations of women encourages both sexes to conform willingly to societal regulation - yet faults Foucault (and others) who do not adequately attend to the real-life oppression of women. Her argument throughout is solidly and refreshingly feminist. (?) This book presents a sustained argument for yet another way in which Christianity in practice betrayed its central confession.?
