A propos de cet article

116 pp. with bibliography and index, plus 120 B/W plates. Usual ex-library markings, along with extensive rebuilding of a damaged spine; this repair may also have left the book slightly cocked. The cover is edgeworn, with the boards showing through the frayed cloth binding at corners. Despite the issues with the exterior, the text and plates remain in fine condition. "This book is a study of the planning of Chandigarh, the capital of Punjab, India. Brought into existence after the Indian partition, Chandigarh was intended to provide a symbolic focal point for the new government, and its design engaged the talents of several distinguished architects, the most noted of whom was Le Corbusier. To Le Corbusier, who developed the final master plan, Chandigarh offered the first opportunity not only for realization of a comprehensive urban design but also for his greatest architectural achievement in the monumental buildings of the capitol complex. The intent has been to trace the evolution of the Chandigarh plan, describing the circumstances surrounding the establishment of the city, analyzing the ideas and design concepts motivating the planning effort, and presenting the designers' theories and methods largely in their own words. Included also is a comprehensive and critical picture of the city as it now exists. The development of a city is, of course, long and complex, and a city may never be termed complete in the sense that an artifact may achieve final form. In many ways, however, the present time appears advantageous for an extensive examination of Chandigarh. The major provisions of the master plan are all in evidence, and yet there is still scope for augmentation and improvement, and for a reconsideration of planning concepts. The moment may be opportune, therefore, to take stock of the progress of the city and, with an eye to the future, to attempt an evaluation of the present success of the planning effort." - Preface.
