This book takes the idea and practice of team-building to a higher level, through systematically fostering emotional and social connections among students. Each carefully crafted activity has been field tested by both authors, who also teach this approach to trainee PE and classroom teachers in workshops designed to help small groups of students feel truly connected to peers in the physical activity setting. Students should practice giving praise, offering suggestions, problem solving and working together as well as building self-esteem through the power of feelings of belonging and ownership. Step-by-step advice is given on how and why to help students look for connections with each other, eliminate threat, take on new challenges, develop character and become more motivated in the physical activity setting. In addition, it also explains how to assess student achievement in ways that enhance, rather than detract from the time you have with them. Motivating, problem-solving and team challenge activities provide practical and easy ways to apply the theory with all groups.
