The Chauci were apopulous Germanic tribe that inhabited the extreme northwestern shore ofGermany between Frisia in the west and the Elbe estuary in the east.Their name derives from Proto-Germanic \*xabukaz, 'hawk'. The Chaucilike the Frisii, inhabited terpen, artificial mounds raised above thelarge floodplains of their region, which served to protect their farmsfrom the floods of the North Sea. Their way of life was unfamiliar tothe Romans, who found it mystifying. A lively, first hand account isdelivered by Pliny the Elder, who writes that the Chauci lived byfishing and hunting. Archeological evidence, however, shows that Plinyisn't quite accurate, since the Chauci also raised cattle and supportedcavalry-troops. The Chauci, according to Tacitus, were highly respectedamong Germanic tribes. He also describes them as peaceful, calm, andlevelheaded, despite the reports in the Annales of piracy.…
