A propos de cet article

Helen Miles Davis's accessible history and reference guide to the chemical elements, revised by Nobel Prize-winning chemist Glenn T. Seaborg. The volume traces the discovery and development of the elements and discusses their properties, sources, isotopes, characteristic compounds, and arrangement within the periodic table. This revised edition is particularly interesting for Seaborg's involvement. One of the central figures in twentieth-century nuclear chemistry, Seaborg shared the 1951 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for discoveries concerning the chemistry of the transuranium elements. The book's treatment extends through elements 93–103, placing it squarely within the scientific culture of the early atomic age. Striking original Ballantine paperback design with molecular/atomic imagery in red, black, and cream. Publisher number U2205 and original 50-cent price printed on front cover. The rear wrapper states, "This is an original—not a reprint," referring to its publication as an original paperback issue. Condition: Good. Original illustrated wrappers show moderate rubbing, edge and corner wear, small creases, and surface scuffing, including a noticeable rubbed area to the black circular design on the front cover. Spine shows rubbing and wear, particularly at the ends and edges. Text block and pages are age-toned as expected for the inexpensive paper stock. Binding remains intact. Please see photographs for condition details. Significance / Collector Appeal: An attractive piece of mid-century popular science publishing with a particularly strong atomic-age cover. Of additional interest because the revisions were prepared by Glenn T. Seaborg, one of the principal discoverers of the transuranium elements. Suitable for collections involving chemistry, the periodic table, nuclear science, atomic-age popular science, or vintage Ballantine paperbacks. Shipping / Returns: Carefully packed for shipment. Returns accepted in accordance with AbeBooks policies. SCI 3b.…
