Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. Etat de la jaquette : Fair. Black cloth bound, hardback book, with gilt titles running along the spine. Comes with price clipped dust jacket, which is a tad worn and torn around the edges. This wonderful book is in really nice condition, normal wear, marks and tear apply consistent with use and age. 328 pages all intact and nice tight binding. Please note this is a large heavy book therefore postage/shipping may increase from listed price depending on final destination. The origins of the game of chess are lost in obscurity. Legend and fable attribute the game to the ancient civilizations and some claims are made for its existence more than four thousand years ago. The earliest known authority is an Arabic author of the tenth century, al-Mas'udi, who describes Indian chess sets carved in ivory in the form of men and animals of such a size, a span of more in height and breadth, that a man stood by to move the pieces from square to square. The authors Hans & Siegfried Wichmann trace side by side the development of the meaning of the chesspieces and their artistic execution. Their book, supported by the most intensive scholastic researches is a valuable contribution to chess literature. There are over two hundred illustrations, many in colour. They show the finest and rarest chesspieces in the world from the intricacies of the oriental piece to the classic symbolism of the Arabic form, the simplicity of early chessmen found on the island of Lewis to the elaborate renaissance and baroque forms, returning to stark simplicity in chess sets designed by Man Ray and the artists of the Bauhaus. This is a book which collectors have been waiting for, a book every chess player will find adds an extra dimension to his game, a book which will give delight to every lover of beautiful things.
