contemporary decorative publisher?s cloth, rebacked quarter dark red morocco, spine with five raised bands, spine decorated with horizontal gilt ruled compartments with central devices, title in gilt on two, upper board with gilt decorative floral ruling and a central gilt illustration, lower board with floral decorative ruling, marbled edges. , Thomas Allom (1804 - 1872) was an English architect, artist, and topographical illustrator. He was a founding member of what became the Royal Institute of British Architects. He designed many buildings in London, including the Church of St Peter's and parts of the elegant Ladbroke Estate in Notting Hill. He also worked with Sir Charles Barry on numerous projects, most notably the Houses of Parliament, and is also known for his numerous topographical works.George Newenham Wright (1794 - 1877) was an Irish writer and Anglican clergyman. He was born in Dublin and graduated B. A. From Trinity College in 1814 and M.A. in 1817, and co-authored this work with Allom in 1843., Size : Large Quarto, Illustrated 124 fine hand coloured steel engraved views of the Chinese Empire based on work by T. Allom and engraved by a various engravers; i.e. Brandard, Dixon, Floyd, Le Petit, Willmore, Allen, Paterson, Wetherhead p, Prior, Adlard, Fox, Bradshaw, Fisher, Capone, Tingle, Sands, Challis, Redaway, etc. Illustrations describe scenarios, architecture, customs and diverse people in various occupations and trades. Each (of the four) volume(s) has separate engraved vignette title pages, and 31 single page plates., Volume : Four volumes in one., Vol 1: illustrated vignette title, bl., title, bl., preface, list of plates, 1-96; vol 2: illustrated vignette title, bl., title, bl., list of plates (1 leaf), 5-72; vol 3: illustrated vignette title, bl., title, bl., list of plates (1 leaf), 5-68; vol 4: illustrated vignette title, bl., title, bl., list of plates (1 leaf), 5-52, general index (2 leaves). A fine and handsome hand coloured example, texts and plates are clean and crisp.
