In response, the Church in the West has formulated five classic answers, each of which, though limited, sheds light on God in Christ as saving Mystery.These models of the Savior--as Representative, the Victim-Victor, the Selfless Penitent, God's Self-Gift of Agape, and as the Substitute-- have been interpreted from one perspective by Catholics and from a different perspective by Protestants. Yet, upon review, these differing views of the five traditional types of soteriology evince common ground. When re-examining five classical models of atonement ecumenically, the authors argue that the saving value of Jesus' life, death, and resurrection is best appreciated through the lenses of both Catholic and Protestant theologians. Dr. Robert A. Krieg (Emeritus Professor of Theology, University of Notre Dame) has published essays in America, Commonweal, Theologische Quartalschrift, and Theological Studies. His recent books include Story-Shaped Christology (Paulist, 1986), Karl Adam: Catholicism in German Culture (University of Notre Dame Press, 1992), Romano Guardini: Precursor of Vatican II (University of Notre Dame Press, 1997), Catholic Theologians in Nazi Germany (Continuum, 2004) and Treasure in the Field: Salvation in the Bible and in Our Lives (Liturgical, 2013). With Kristin M. Colberg, he co-edited The Theology of Cardinal Walter Kasper (Liturgical, 2014). He is the editor-translator of Romano Guardini: Spiritual Writings (Orbis, 2005), and the translator of Franz Jägerstätter: Letters and Writings from Prison (Orbis, 2009).
Dr. Brandon R. Peterson (Assistant Professor of Religious Studies, University of Utah) is the author of Being Salvation: Atonement and Soteriology in the Theology of Karl Rahner (Fortress, 2017) and has published essays in Theological Studies, Modern Theology, Philosophy & Theology, America, and other journals. He is an active member of the Catholic Theological Society of America and serves as the Steering Committee Coordinator of the Karl Rahner Society.
