A propos de cet article

Christabel. Kubla Khan, a Vision. The Pains of Sleep Samuel Taylor Coleridge Limited Edition by Woodbank Press Samuel Taylor Coleridge began Christabel in 1797, during one of the most fertile periods of his poetic career, completing its two surviving parts by 1800. Although conceived as a longer work, the poem remained unfinished and was not published until 1816, when Lord Byron encouraged Coleridge to issue it together with Kubla Khan and The Pains of Sleep. From its first appearance, Christabel attracted attention for its strange, dreamlike atmosphere, supernatural unease and highly distinctive musical structure. Its flexible four-stress metre, derived from the ballad tradition but handled with considerable freedom, proved particularly influential. Byron admired it sufficiently to adapt aspects of its rhythm in The Siege of Corinth, while its combination of medieval setting, psychological ambiguity and the uncanny helped shape later Romantic and Victorian poetry. Coleridge (1772–1834), poet, critic and philosopher, was one of the central figures of English Romanticism. Together with William Wordsworth he helped establish a new poetic language in Lyrical Ballads, while works such as The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Kubla Khan and Biographia Literaria secured his place among the most influential writers and critics of the period. Unfinished though it remains, Christabel is among his most enigmatic and formally original poems. Rambler Press has also published another major work associated with the Lake Poets: the two-volume Lyrical Ballads with Other Poems. The Rambler Press Edition This edition is limited to 25 copies. The text has been set in 14-point Monotype Bulmer, a typeface derived from the celebrated types cut by William Martin for the printer William Bulmer at the end of the eighteenth century. The sheets are printed on Zuber Rieder cotton paper. Each copy is bound by hand by Krzysztof Cofalik in quarter leather with marbled paper sides and is housed in a slipcase. The restrained typography, traditional materials and hand binding place the edition firmly within the tradition of the private press book.
