I suppose that that little incident has remained alive in my memory because it so aptly illustrates the two sides of his character, and the two fields in which he was constantly active: scholarly erudition and literary entertainment. The remarkable thing about Robert van Gulik was that these two areas did not clash they reinforced each other, and even to a large extent overlapped. His scholarly work was clearly guided by his artistic Interests and his preference for 'playful' theses: painting, calligraphy, classical Chinese music, sexual life In pre-modern China, crime and detection, and even the traditional Chinese lore concerning his pet animal, the gibbon. And, on the other hand, the works which he wrote for the general public - as a form of relaxation, primarily for himself, as a means to escape from the chores of diplomatic routine based on a broad and many-sided familiarity with Chinese history and culture. They were byproducts of his amazing sinological erudition, accurate down to the smallest detail to such an extent that a German professor of Chinese language and literature once confided to me to have prescribed the Judge Dee novels to his students as compulsory reading materials. This remarkable versatility was no doubt largely due to his personal experience and personal involvement with the subjects which he studied: as a collector of rare books and works of art, an admired calligrapher, an able performer on the Chinese lute, and a lover of all the good things East Asian life could offer. More than any other sinologist of modern times, he identified himself with the cultural ideals and life-style of pre-modern China, and, in particular, with those of the Chinese mandarin who, like himself, so often combined the official career with the pleasures of scholarship, artistic creativity, and savoir-vivre. That also explains why the different fields of his activity did not clash: whatever he wrote about was part of his life the man is fully reflected in his work, from his most serious contribution to scholarship to his most playful novelette. For that Robert van Gulik will be remembered by anybody who has the privilege of having known him." , introductory tex, "Robert Van Gulik, Diplomat and Mandarin" by Dr. E. Zurcher, Professor of East-Asian History, Director Sinological Institute, State University Leiden, The Netherlands.…
