A scarce 'Seconde Volume' of Grafton's A Chronicle at Large and Meere History of the Affayres of Englande. Bound in morocco calf with gilt decoration to the spine. Rebacked with the original leather. This work is the 'This seconde volume, beginning at William the Conquerour' of Grafton's Chronicle. Black Letter throughout. The introductory 192pp first part is missing, including the preliminaries and its title page. The title page of the Seconde Volume are missing. Pages 1271 to 1308, and 1311-1314, are missing, from the end of Henry VIII to the beginnings of Edward VI. Pages 1357 to 1364 are missing, that relate to Queen Mary. Pages 1367-1369 are missing, that relate to Queen Elizabeth. A Table declaring the reignes of everie king of this Realme to the rear of the work is missing (as usual). This work matches the ESTC #S121210. Richard Grafton, c.1511 1573, was an English printer and historian. Grafton is famous for his historical chronicles. The first of these was An Abridgment published in 1562. After writing "scathingly of other previous abridgments of chronicles" in his preface, there ensued a "literary quarrel" between Grafton and historian John Stow that "represents an early (and illuminating) disagreement between scholarly authors, even though it had its origins as much in the commercial concerns of the initial publishers as in the authors' concerns for their literary "property" (DNB). Grafton published at least three separate chronicles of the history of England, the largest and most comprehensive of which being A Chronicle at Large. In a full calf binding. There is mild wear to the extremities, including bumping and some marks.The binding is tight and firm. There are title pages, preliminaries and pages of this work missing. Please refer above for further details. Internally the pages are slightly browned with handling marks and the occasional stain, which become most prominent on the first couple of pages. There are some small closed tears and page 373 has a small section missing, that has been repaired. There is a thumb indentation, as can be seen in the photograph above, running from page 1 to approximately 390. The indentation only affects the occasional small section of the marginal chronological notes. There are some faint tidemarks. There are ink inscriptions relating to the history of the book on the front pastedown and the occasional marginal ink annotation throughout the text. Good Only.
