A propos de cet article

Some edgewear and creasing of spine and covers,as well some age toning, otherwise still a good reading copy. City of Baraboo is a science fiction novel by Barry B. Longyear, first published in hardcover in 1980 by Berkley Publishing Corporation. It is the first book in what became known as the Circus World trilogy, followed by Elephant Song and Circus World. The premise centres on the last circus on Earth, which is struggling under ever-changing bureaucratic barriers and financial pressures, ultimately deciding to take the show to the stars and play the worlds of the near galaxy. Set in the year 2142, the circus receives permission to go on a galactic tour after falling on hard times. The title refers to the circus starship, named by its owner O'Hara after Baraboo, Wisconsin, the birthplace and former winter quarters of the five Ringling Brothers and their famous circus. A central conflict arises when the company financing the ship's construction secretly contracts with the Nuumian Empire, an alien government in the Ninth Quadrant, to sell the vessel to them, since it was built along the lines of a military assault carrier and would be a valuable addition to their fleet. How O'Hara and his crew of performers and workers manage to hijack their own starship and keep it forms the first story of the book. The novel is structured as a series of connected stories, with much of it told through the eyes of "Warts" Tho, an alien Pendiian who joins the show in its second year in space and keeps the route book, the daily log of the circus's travels and stops. The book is praised for its deep immersion in circus culture and lingo, and is generally considered the strongest entry in the trilogy. Reader reception has been very positive, with fans appreciating the warmth of the characters and the unusual combination of circus life and space opera.…
