Springer-Verlag began publishing books in higher mathematics in 1920, when the series
Grundlehren der mathematischen Wissenschaften, initially conceived as a series of advanced textbooks, was founded by Richard Courant. A few years later a new series
Ergebnisse der Mathematik und ihrer Grenzgebiete, survey reports of recent mathematical research, was added.
Of over 400 books published in these series, many have become recognized classics and remain standard references for their subject. Springer is reissuing a selected few of these highly successful books in a new, inexpensive sofcover edition to make them easily accessible to younger generations of students and researchers.
Biography of Joram Lindenstrauss Joram Lindenstrauss was born in Tel Aviv on October 28, 1936. He studied at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, where he received his doctoral degree in 1962. He has been on the faculty of this institution ever since 1965. Lindenstrauss works in various areas of functional analysis and geometry. Besides structure theory of Banach spaces, which is the subject of this book, he has contributed prominently to the theory of convex sets in finite and infinite dimensions and to geometric nonlinear functional analysis. Biography of Lior Tzafriri Lior Tzafriri was born in Bucharest on May 9, 1936. He began his studies in Romania but completed them only in Jerusalem after emigrating to Israel in 1961. He received his doctoral degree from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem in 1966 and has been on the faculty of this institution ever since 1970. Tzafriri's work reaches into various areas of functional analysis. Besides his influential work on the geometry of Banach spaces, he has made important contributions to operator theory and to problems in harmonic analysis.
