Set in the fifteenth century, relating to the travels of a young scribe and illuminator, Gerard Eliassoen, through several European countries. With descriptions of events, people and their practices in minute detail, exploring the struggle between man's obligations to family and to Church. Arthur Conan Doyle named this as his favourite novel, saying: "I do not know where I can find a book in which the highest qualities of head and of heart go together as they do in this one." Written by Charles Reade, a British novelist and dramatist, best known for this novel. With four leaves of publisher's advertisements to the rear of volume four. In the original full cloth binding. Externally, sound with light rubbing and minor bumping to the extremities. The odd small mark to the board. Hinges starting but firm. Internally, firmly bound.
