Book Description

Google Cloud Platform offers significant scalability, but managing costs effectively is critical to realizing its value. The Cloud FinOps Playbook for Google Cloud is a practical guide to managing cloud spend and driving financial accountability on GCP.

Written for cloud architects, FinOps professionals, and platform engineers, this book connects core FinOps principles to the GCP ecosystem. You'll start with the foundations of cloud economics and GCP's billing structure, then build skills in cost allocation, budget management, usage monitoring with BigQuery and Looker Studio, and savings identification using the Google Cloud FinOps Hub.

The book also covers the dual role of AI in FinOps, that is, using AI for FinOps through agentic cost management, and applying FinOps for AI by establishing cost governance over AI workloads. You'll build automation for reporting and forecasting, implement quota guardrails, and drive financial accountability across engineering, finance, and operations teams.

By the end of this book, you'll be equipped to build a mature, automated, and collaborative FinOps practice on Google Cloud.

What you will learn

• Apply FinOps principles to the Google Cloud environment, including AI workloads
• Establish the FinOps operating model, define roles, and enable cross-functional collaboration
• Navigate GCP billing models, pricing structures, FOCUS specs, and cost allocation strategies
• Set budgets, quotas, and alerts to manage cloud spend proactively
• Analyze usage with BigQuery and visualize spend trends in Looker Studio
• Optimize compute, storage, networking, and databases using FinOps Hub and native GCP tools
• Enforce financial guardrails to support a strong FinOps culture across the organization

Who this book is for

This book is ideal for FinOps practitioners, cloud architects, platform engineers, and DevOps professionals who want to optimize cloud spend and implement financial accountability in Google Cloud environments. A working knowledge of GCP services, billing concepts, and basic cloud operations is assumed. Familiarity with tools like BigQuery and GCP IAM will be helpful but not mandatory.
