The Cold War Beneath tells the story of an event at sea off the New England coast during the post World War II years. Two submarines play a dangerous underwater game of hide and seek in this action thriller as U.S. Navy forces try to find out the Russians' true intentions for being in American waters. The story addresses day-to-day life onboard a submarine during conduct of a hazardous mission, its effects upon the crew, and upon family and friends ashore. A Soviet spy becomes involved in the personal lives of the submariners' friends and family then uses them to his advantage to gather intelligence about American submarine operations. An old adversary returns to the scene of his crime to aid the Americans in finding the Russian agent. The Foreword to The Cold War Beneath is written by Don Walsh, Ph. D. a renowned oceanographer, world explorer and marine specialist who has been associated with ocean science for more than 50 years.
À propos de l?auteur: Veteran Author D.M. Ulmer has authored eight novels: Silent Battleground and Shadows of Heroes, (undersea action thrillers); Count the Ways, (a romance novel); Missing Person, The Roche Harbor Caper and The Long Beach Caper, (a trilogy of mysteries); and Where or When, (a historical novella). The Cold War Beneath is a sequel to Shadows of Heroes. Though Ulmer’s submarine novels are fiction, a number of prominent submariners attest to their scenario and technical accuracies. No surprise, Captain Ulmer continues to serve—now as a volunteer at the Seattle Museum of Flight and a local hospital. He has made many personal contacts in these capacities, some finding their way into his novels. Ulmer declares, “Everyone has a story that deserves to be told.” Captain Ulmer and his wife Carol live on Lake Sammamish in Redmond, Washington. Foreword by: Dr. Don Walsh, renowned oceanographer, world explorer and marine specialist has been associated with ocean science for more than 50 years. He began his career as a U.S. Naval Academy graduate in 1954 and served for over 15 years in the U.S. Navy submarine service, retiring at the rank of captain. On 23 January 1960, Dr. Walsh and Jacques Piccard made a world record decent into the Mariana Trench, 35,798 feet. Other dives include the RMS Titanic, the German battleship Bismark and the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Dr. Walsh holds an Engineering degree, U.S. Naval Academy; a Masters degree in Political Science, San Diego State University; and a Master’s degree and Ph.D. in Physical Oceanography, Texas A&M University. Among his honors, he was appointed by Presidents Carter and Reagan to the U.S. National Advisory Committee on Oceans & Atmosphere, was once a member of the Law of the Sea Advisory Committee for the U.S. State Department and served as a member of the Marine Board of the U.S. Research Council. Life Magazine has named him one of the world’s great explorers and in 2010 National Geographic bestowed their greatest honor to him, the Hubbard Medal.
