A propos de cet article

A collection of ten letters, measuring from 5" x 6 ½" to 8 ½" x 11", along with a poem and two recipes. Old folds from mailing, a couple with small tears at the folds, a bit of edgewear, smaller recipe soiled and torn in half, else near fine overall. Ten letters written to members of the Granger family of Delaware County, New York, with dates ranging from June, 1889 to March, 1945. The collection loosely ties together, offering a small look into the life of a Catskill Mountains family at the turn of the century. The letters are addressed to Allen L. Granger, Jennie Gallup, and Jennie’s eventual husband, Allen’s cousin George. Included are letters to Allen from his aunt and uncle, as well as one from his younger brother Arthur, who is living in Montana; letters to Jennie from three different boys, seemingly with no relation to the family, each showing some interest in her, either directly or not-so-directly; and two later letters from military men, written to Jennie and George Granger. The three earliest letters are written to Allen L. Granger of Delhi, Delaware County, New York. Two are from his aunt and uncle, Rhoda and Ogden Smith of Pipestone City, Minnesota. The third, dated October 10, 1898, is from his brother Arthur Riggs Granger, a farmer in Malta, Montana. Arthur says it's been the worst weather he's had since moving to Montana, telling a story of a big snow storm that left him stuck about 25 miles from home with a load of lumber and four horses. "Had to lay over one day, and my horses were almost dead when I got home." He talks about all the work he has to get done, and ends the letter "Hope when you go up to your nice white bed, you will think of ARG sleeping in his greasy old blankets with nothing but the blue sky for a roof over his head and no other company but his four broncos and the howl of coyotes and wolves, and congratulate yourself that you don’t live out west." Five letters are written to Jennie Gallup of Walton, Delaware County, New York. The first, dated August 7, 1905, is from Burton Cole, who is working a temporary job at a quarry in Pennsylvania. The next letters are from a cheeky boy named Josiah, while the final two are from Munroe Evans of Bainbridge, New York. He tells her if she comes for Christmas, they can go skating together, and says he is "somewhat anxious to see your dear face, had such a pleasant and short meeting in the summer." Less than a year later Jennie married George Frederick Granger Jr. The final two letters are adressed to Jennie and George, who are still living in Walton, New York. The first, dated September 4, 1927, is from a man named Leon (?) R. Barrows, who seems to have been on the U.S.S. Detroit, and stationed in France. The other is dated much later, in 1945. It is from an army man named Kenneth A. Raymond, who is stationed somewhere overseas. He tells them "It is getting a little warmer now and the bugs, etc, are on the warpath. We are getting so we don’t mind them anymore, in fact, the coffee tastes somewhat strange if we don’t have a couple flies floating around in it." Additionally, there is a two-page poem titled "The ***ing Fly", which uses a series of dots in place of choice words; a recipe for "Itch Ointment"; and a small recipe for "Salve". A short look into a Delaware County, New York family, facing the challenges of keeping in touch in the 19th and early 20th centuries. …
