A propos de cet article

Description :

The complete work of the Comic Almanack, both the First and Second Series, showcasing classic Victorian wit and the talents of George Cruickshank. Both series of The Comic Almanack: An Ephemeris in Jest and Earnest, Containing Merry Tales, Humorous Poetry, Quips, and Oddities, written by prolific and witty Victorian writers William Thackeray, Albert Smith, Gilbert A. Beckett, Robert Broguh, Thomas Hood and the Brothers Mayhew, illustrated by George Cruickshank, as well as Hine and Landells. In the publisher's decorative original green cloth. Each series contains a frontispiece, the Second Series a folding frontispiece, as well as numerous plates throughout, including folding plates to the Second Series. Running from 1835-1853, The Comic Almanack is riddled with the Victorian wit beloved by many. Originally depicting numerous amusing busy street scenes across London, the Almanack later became more satirical, poking fun at 'philanthropists' who cared little for the plight of the poor. The work is a brilliant reflection of Cruickshank's talents. The First Series: 1835-1843. The Second Series: 1844-1853. In the publisher's decorative original green cloth. Externally, mostly smart, with a couple of faint marks to boards and rubbing to joints. Bumping to the head and tail of the spine, and to the extremities. Grey end papers are generally clean with slight spotting and minor wear to front end paper hinges. Internally, firmly bound, with slight wear to hinge between plate and p.273 in First Series. Unopened leaves to rear of both Series. A large closed tear to folding plate adjoining leaf p.250 of Second Series. Pages are bright and clean, with the faint odd spot, heavier to the final leaves of the First Series. Good. N° de réf. du vendeur 1011N18
