Item description from seller

Retired library book with usual library markings. Text free of underlining, writing and highlighting. Foreword AS EARLY as 1865, the New York state census included "Details of enlistments by cities and towns." This return enumerated for each city and township the number of men supplied to identified Batteries and Regiments of the State. A summary, "Regiments into which enlistments occurred," reported the total number of enlistments of each county by Battery and Regiment. The instructions of the census enumerators anticipated difficulty in securing information on enlistments. The apprehension of a military draft, or some scheme of taxation will, it is feared lead to some apprehension in the minds of persons not correctly informed upon the objects of the census, that it may have some connection with these dreaded measures. "Notwithstanding this assurance, the greatest difficulty was experienced from this source in the large cities, and in many of the towns." The information was obtained from the soldiers' families without the aid of official papers. The returns do not include the men who had no families to answer for them. Finally, "deficiencies [of the return] were further increased by the neglect, inability or unwillingness of families to give information." The census returns as a source for the recruiting areas of the Batteries and Regiments are thus not only incomplete but based on a secondary source. The individual records of the soldiers, however, reported the city or town of enlistment, and from this file, Frederick Phisterer compiled the information presented in the third edition (1912) of his New York in the War of the Rebellion. Phisterer commented that "it is impracticable, in fact impossible, to obtain any accurate figures of the number of men furnished during the war by each county, city, town and village." He was able to list, however, under each regimental summary, the places at which the respective companies "were recruited principally." The present compiler has tabulated this information, as supplied by Phisterer, bringing together under each community of the State its contribution by company(ies) and regiment(s) to the forces raised by New York State for the Civil War. 30 pages.
