A propos de cet article

ESTC notes five copies in North America. [4], iv, 128, 169-184 pp. (text continuous). Original pale blue wrappers, a bit dusty, some wear to spine. A fine copy, uncut and partially unopened. Second edition, with significant additions; first published in 1721 (98 pp. only). ESTC catalogues this work as if it were essentially a translation of Tanneguio Le Fvre's essay (his "Methode court et facile pour apprendre les humanits Grecque et Latines," which is included, but the book is in fact an original treatise on the teaching of languages by an accomplished linguist of Welsh descent who was employed for a time as a tutor to the children of George II. Philipps followed this work in 1726 with his Essay towards a Universal and Rational Grammar. With a new two-page "advertisement to the reader," explaining some of the changes for this edition. The excerpts from Ascham and Locke have been added, as have several other short pieces translated from the French; of particular interest is the inclusion of the full text of Milton's Of Education Alston X, 167. cf. Coleridge, Turnbull Milton Collection, 36 and 38 (the editions of 1727/8 and 1750 only.…

Description de la boutique

Our office is located in Los Angeles on West Third Street, between the Beverly Center and Farmer's Market. Though we gave up an open shop after more than thirty years, we welcome serious customers and dealers. We are normally open from 10 to 6 Monday through Saturday. Since some of our less expensive books are located in a temperature-controlled storage area offsite, you may want to call ahead of time to insure that the book you want to see will be available. We feature a stock strong in literature, history, Western philosophy, history of science, history of computers, and art. We are members of the Antiquarian Booksellers Association of America and the International League of Antiquarian Booksellers. We have books from the 15th to the 20th century in all prices ranges. We do appraisals for income tax and insurance purposes. We purchase individual books and libraries. Proprietors: Michael R. Thompson, Kathleen D. Thompson, Carol Sandberg…
