1706. Early or possible first edition - fourth and last volume. Title-page and 593 pp. plus a 12-page index. The author of this work is not stated but we believe it to be David Jones (fl. 1676-1720), a historical writer and translator; said to have been a captain in the horse guards, and some time secretary interpretor to Louvois. His best known work is his 'A Compleat History of Europe', of which this is the fourth volume covering the years 1647 to 1676. It is essentially a compilation drawn from contemporary tracts and books, monthlies, newspapers, and any source that came to hand, and preserves a wide variety of contemporary accounts of events in a convenient and easy to consult reference work. The work proved to be popular and was continued annually for several years. The book is bound in contemporary full leather boards with five raised bands and gold titling on a leather label on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with expected signs of its age. The leather on the boards is scuffed with some staining and the corners are lightly bumped with a little damage and loss on the bottom corners. About 1/8" of the leather is missing from the top of the spine and about 1/4" is missing from the bottom. There is a thin split in the leather down most of the front spine edge and a split of about 3/4" at the top and about 1 1/4" at the bottom of the rear spine edge. The contents are tight and clean with some expected scattered small marks and stains from finger smudges, etc. There is a light water stain on the fore edge and around the bottom corner of the first dozen or so pages and a larger and more noticeable water stain around the bottom corner of pages 549 onwards. The title-page has some soiling and light foxing and a second front free endpaper, or possibly a half-title page, has been removed. The front and rear fixed and free endpapers are soiled and stained with 'God' written on the front free endpaper.
