A propos de cet article

The Fermiers généraux edition. Two octavo volumes, bindings 18.6 x 12.5 cm (7-5/16 x 4-15/16 in.), pages 17.8 x 11.4 cm (7-1/16 x 4-1/2 in.). Contemporary full red levant morocco, covers with triple fillet gilt borders, spines elaborately gilt in eight compartments with rules and floral arabesques and brown and olive morocco gilt lettering pieces, cover edges gilt ruled, gilt dentelle roll, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt, pale blue silk marker ribbons, binding attributed to Derôme [le jeune] in the Pellion sale, cloth slipcase. Printed on fine watermarked laid paper. Some chipping, splitting and wear to tops and bottoms of spines, slight wear at cover corners and along joints, unobtrusive soft creasing passim in second volume at bottom outside corners (binder's fault), scattered negligible spots, marks and other slight creases in text (dead bug on p. 270), overall quite clean and in very good condition. Softly penciled bibliographical notes on the blanks; loose typescript of catalogue entries laid in. Collates complete, but with four instances of pairs of plates, thus 84 plates instead of 80 as listed; vol. I: xiv, [2], 268, [2] pp., inserted engraved portrait of La Fontaine by Étienne Ficquet after Hyacinthe Rigaud and 41 additional inserted engraved plates after Charles Eisen (plus 2 blanks front and 2 rear); vol. II: [2], viii, [2], 306, [4] pp., inserted engraved portrait of Eisen by Ficquet after François Xavier Vispré and 43 additional inserted engraved plates after Eisen (plus 16 pp. "Avis au Relieur" and 2 blanks front and 2 rear). The portraits and plates are all before letters. Pierre-Phillipe Choffard engraved the two title vignettes, the two other full-page vignettes separating the prefaces and the tales, the two headpieces leading the first tales, and 51 tailpieces. Provenance: P. Guy Pellion (his sale, Paris, February 1882); Fritz Kreisler (his sale, New York, January 1949); Theodore Cohn (1923-2021). The royal set held by the Bibliothèque nationale de France RES-YE-2256/7 ("the BnF set") is a very comparable early set in similar gilt-tooled contemporary red morocco bindings. Here the plates for "Le Cas de Conscience" (II, 143) and "Le Diable de Papefiguiere" (II, 149) are in découverte state (the same découverte plates as in the BnF set). De Longueil re-engraved here the plate for "Le Cocu Batu et Content" (I, 23), originally by Leveau, with a much superior design, but not the plate for "Les Cordeliers de Catalogne" (II, 19), which remains Baquoy's (again as in the BnF set). Here, the plates for "Le Calendrier des Viellards" (I, 69), "Les Oies de Frere Phillipe" (II, 1) and "Le Tableau" (II, 223) are present in both rejected (refusées) and replacement states, and the plates for "La Servante Justifiée" (I, 47), "La Coupe Enchantée" (I, 127) and "Les Rémois" (II, 89) in their rejected states only. In comparison, there are no rejected plates or pairs of plates in the BnF set. The second plate for "Le Faucon" (I, 157) is here present in two copies (one, not in the BnF set, being an earlier and brighter printing lacking the bracelet on the woman's bare arm). In summary, this set has two plates in découverte state, one of the two re-engraved plates, at least three plates with minor early variations, six plates refusées, and four instances of pairs of plates. The foregoing observations are, however, incidental to an assessment of this set. Importantly, the paper in this set is bright and without age-toning, and the plates are early and incisively printed, often exceeding those in the BnF set. Indeed, the two concluding culs-de-lampe by Choffard (one with his medallion portrait), in the same state as in the BnF set, are starkly superior here. Again, the contemporary bindings here and on the BnF set are very similar in quality, tooling and preservation. A penciled bibliographical note on the blank verso of the front endleaf in vol. I of this set offers the succinct estimation: "Exemplaire exceptionnel.".…
