A propos de cet article

Gr. 8°. XVI, 1 Blatt, 286 Seiten. Originalleinen mit Umschlag (= The Jossey-Bass Behavioral Science Series). Umschlag berieben, sonst gutes Exemplar. - No other nation has as many social scientists or spends as much money on social-science research as the United States. In no other nation do social scientists make such great claims for the contributions they make to the resolution of domestic problems. Despite expenditures of money and effort, however, the problems are mounting and the dubious quality of government-sponsored research is becoming increasingly apparent. Furthermore, social-science spokesmen-through the main social-science associations-act not as objective scientists, but as advocates who present only those facts which serve their own causes. Contracting for Knowledge exposes such advocacy by realistically assessing the value and limitation of government-sponsored social research. Harold Orlans summarizes and evaluates evidence and expert opinion on such sensitive subjects as the politics and biases of social scientists, the politicization of social-science associations, the evaluation of government social programs, the scholar's responsibility to government, and the kinds of social research for which universities, nonprofit institutes, and other organizations are best suited. Orlans believes that the selection of knowledge by both researcher and public official is inevitably biased by ideological, political, and personal considerations and that the increased "utilization" of social science by government consists largely in the increased employment of social scientists and the adoption of measures which they favor. In making this assessment, Orlans draws upon the record of social-science association activities since World War II, the responses of prominent social scientists and government officials to inquiries he conducted for Congressman Henry Reuss, and the work of such bodies as the Brim Commission and the Behavioral and Social Sciences Survey Committee.
