Item description from seller

The Corsair. A Tale George Gordon, Lord Byron Limited Edition by Woodbank Press First published in 1814, The Corsair was one of the works that established Byron as the defining literary figure of the Romantic age. Written in heroic couplets, the poem follows Conrad, a solitary and defiant corsair whose pride, melancholy and moral ambiguity helped shape the enduring figure of the Byronic hero. The poem was an immediate success and belongs to the group of Oriental tales through which Byron developed his characteristic combination of exotic setting, psychological conflict and romantic fatalism. Its central figure — isolated, rebellious and governed by his own code — became one of the most influential archetypes of nineteenth-century European literature. The Woodbank Press Edition Published by Woodbank Press in Warsaw in 2023 in a strictly limited edition of 25 numbered copies. This is copy no. 1. The text is set in Brunel Text Roman No. 2, a contemporary interpretation of the English modern roman tradition associated with the typography of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. The sheets are printed on Century Laid cotton paper, whose laid surface and restrained tone complement both the typography and the period character of Byron's text. Each copy is hand-bound in full brown leather, the covers ruled in gilt, the spine with gilt rules and a contrasting black leather title label. The volume has marbled endpapers and marbled edges and is housed in a matching marbled slipcase. The edition was conceived in the tradition of the private press: limited in number, typographically restrained, and produced with particular attention to paper, binding and the physical form of the book.
