Probably the First Edition, 1856 on the copyright page, 1857 on the title page. I'm pretty certain the book was first published in 1857. Several sellers are identifying their 1857 edition as the first, and no 1856 edition is for sale anywhere. The Metropolitan Museum apparently has this Derby & Jackson 1857 edition in its collection. I've rated the condition of the book only Fair due mostly to the condition of the covers, more specifically the spine, and also issues with the binding. Two gatherings have detached from the binding, though the pages in each gathering are bound together. These separations likely put stress on the cloth of the spine, one piece is detached and three other pieces are attached only on one side. A piece of the cloth is entirely missing off the spine's top edge. The photos should provide a pretty good idea of what I'm describing. The front cover (attached to the brown front end paper) is also detached. So this is very clearly a book for someone with repair skills. I'm pricing it at 1/4 the price of the lowest priced copies of the few other first editions. The pages are in pretty nice condition. I've taken a number of photographs, but because there is a limit on how many I can post you should just contact me and I will pass along the others. A minority of the pages have a water stain at a corner and I've taken a few pictures of those. The great majority of pages are very clean. They are also in very good condition. I didn't see much by way of creasing. There are no markings. There are no attachments. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere. Back to the covers, there is smooth rubbing on both top and bottom edges (similar looking to what you see off the top edge of the front cover-- first photo). There's only very light rubbing on the covers middle edges, and only over their top halves. There are fairly small spots of rub-through at the corners. All three page edges are gilt. The gilt is in very nice shape, looks clean, shiny. I failed to mention an important positive. All of the 16 color illustrations by Jules Champagne are present, including the frontispiece and title page. There are all in pretty nice condition as well. There is a tissue between the frontispiece and the illustrated title page, and all of the other illustrations have a tissue guard protecting them. The tissue guards are all in very good condition as well. The textual title page (which follows the illustrated title page) has some foxing on it but there are very few pages in the text that have any foxing, and if so it's just a spot or two. I didn't see any tears on any the pages. All of the pages are present. The book is fairly heavy. The shipping is free within the United States. N° de réf. du vendeur 005474
