'Orne de figues'. Early edition (possibly first, possibly a pirated copy) of Fromaget's controversial 1742 novel that was banned immediately. Purporting to be a historical document published in Constantinople (hence a lack of bibliographic information), Le Cousin de Mahomet describes the experiences of a Parisian Schoolboy who runs away only to be enslaved by the Turk. What follows is a both a scandalous rampage through the harems of the Sultan and a sensitive appreciation of women and the underclass. The vividness of the Turkish scenes led some to think it a true account, now it is believed to be a criticism of French society. Two volume bound as one. 24mo. (135x90mm) 204pp. & 247pp. With 6 engravings and decorated title pages. A later rebinding in polished calf with raised bands and marbled endpapers. Some very light spotting and worming to title page. Occasional small marks and tears within, none affecting text. Some rubbing to spine. Previous owner's/seller's notes on bibliographic details. Otherwise a clean tight, handsome copy. Good/very good.
