A propos de cet article

This scarce edition of Rosa Mulholland's Cynthia's Bonnet Shop, namely: the first thus illustrated by Gertrude Demain Hammond. In prize binding, with handsome, pictorial boards. Undated, and with no edition remarks, however appearing to be the first thus illustrated edition of the work published in 1901.With eight monochrome plate illustrations including a frontispiece by Gertrude Demain Hammond. Collated complete. Hammond's illustrations appeared in publications such as The Yellow Book, as well as in illustrated editions of the works of William Shakespeare, Edmund Spenser, and Charles Dickens, and she was, along with her sister, one of the few female illustrators for The Idler in 1892.Full bound in striking, pictorial cloth. This copy of the work in handsome prize binding with the coat of arms of The Collegiate School, Queen's Park, Glasgow, gilt-stamped to the rear board and the institution's bookplate to the front pastedown. With 15 pages of contemporary publisher's advertisements at the rear of the work.Scarce.Rosa Mulholland was an Irish author who is now best known for having received the encouragement of Charles Dickens in her literary pursuits, despite encountering some initial hurdles to success. She ultimately published a great number of novels, as well as several well-received poems. Cynthia's Bonnet Shoptells the story of an Irish eldest daughter of three who sets up her own bonnet shop, and ultimately finds happiness in marriage. In full cloth prize binding. Externally, generally very smart with a touch of rubbing and some fading to the spine's cloth. Some bumping to the head and tail of the spine and the extremities resulting in marginal splitting to and loss of the cloth, heaviest to the front joint at the spine's tail. The Collegiate School, Queen's Park, Glasgow, bookplate to the front pastedown. Front hinge strained. Internally, binding is strained. Pages are just lightly toned with scattered spotting, however are generally clean. A very good copy given the scarcity of the work. Very Good.…
